Vintage Christmas Santa in Sleigh Celluloid Reindeer Candy Container Japan 1940s

  

This wonderful vintage Christmas Santa in a unique sleigh is a candy container. The driving is a smaller spun cotton with hand painted clay face Santa. There is one celluloid reindeer leading the sleigh.

It is off white with pink facial detail. The reindeer has a paper label on the bottom that states "Made in - Occupied - Japan". The sleigh is what is so unique about this piece. It is cardboard with the white "snow". On top of that snow is white and red mica glitter. Both sides of the sleigh have an opening where the Santa sits. One side is larger than the other and was made this way.

Under the top edge are three more holes on each side. These holes are filled with red cellophane. Starting by Santa and wrapping around the bottom and back up the back is white netting on red.

Around the top opening is faded red chenille. Santa is steering with a cotton string. The harness for the reindeer is silver covered wire. The two additional wires were added later I believe.

This wonderful Christmas decoration is stamped on the bottom of the inside "Made in - Japan" in an oval. I have had other pieces that combined Japan and Occupied Japan parts. I believe this was done originally.

This wonderful candy container is 7" long x 2-3/4" wide with the chenille x 3-1/2 tall at the reindeer. This decoration is from the late 1940s. This candy container was used. There are holes in the cellophane, but it is still complete. In the first two pictures, at the top of the sleigh is a crack.

The snow has pulled up a bit. It is complete, and could use a drop of glue. There is no structural damage.
