Antique HUBLEY Cast Iron Sleigh with Santa Drawn by 2 Reindeer. Made by Hubley Manufacturing Co. On wheels; Reindeer move in a galloping motion when sleigh is pulled forward. Original paint on sleigh and reindeer.
Beautiful Vintage Condition (See photos). This beautiful and very rare antique cast iron sleigh was one of the early toys made by the Hubley Manufacturing Co of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. It appears in their 1909 "Catalogue of Iron and Steel Toys" on page 33, and has a catalog number of 773 (it does not appear in their 1906 catalog). The appraiser on the show said it was from the 1920s and 30s, but, as mentioned above, it appeared in Hubley's 1909 catalog.
The toy measures 17" long, about 7" tall and 3 1/2 wide, and weighs 5 lbs. The Santa is held in the seat by a cast iron peg and is removable. When the sleigh is pushed or pulled along the floor, the reindeer alternately move up and down as if they are galloping. The paint on the sleigh and and reindeer is all original and shows normal wear after 110 years. The paint on Santa's coat, gloves and boots is so nice that I really can't guarantee he entirely has original paint.
His face and beard have original paint however. Besides this being an exceptional example of early 20th century antique toys, it will become an fabulous addition to your Christmas displays!
