KRESS Japan CELLULOID SANTA Sleigh & white REINDEER. Excellent and nearly complete (missing Santa's whip). 1930s-era Made in Japan celluloid Santa seated in a celluloid sleigh pulled by a team of two handsome celluloid reindeer. This piece was made for and marketed by the S.
Chain of five and dime stores. Santa and the reindeer are hollow celluloid.
Santa is hand-painted in bright cerise red with a pale pink face and light green sack. The sleigh and reindeer are white with silver glitter. They are outfitted with a white wire harness from which dangle tiny, brass jingle bells. Santa holds the original cotton cord reins.
This is a beautiful decoration, obviously never played with or displayed much as the colors are bright with no scratches or wear and the fragile celluloid is intact with no damage. The entire ensemble measures 14 1/2" long from the back of the sleigh to the tip of the lead reindeer's nose, and 3" high to the top of their antlers.
The sleigh measures 6 1/2" long, 2 1/2" wide, and 4 1/2 high to the top of Santa's hat. The sleigh is stamped on the underside with the word'JAPAN' and there is a paper Japan import sticker also. Both sides of sleigh have a molded Japan imprint. The item "Celluloid SANTA CLAUS & SLEIGH 2 REINDEER Christmas JAPAN 1930's S.
