17 Antique German Santa Claus In SleighPainted Velvet Reindeer Candy Container

  

The overall length is 17 from the tip of the reindeers nose to the back of the sleigh (with no space between the reindeers tail and the front of the sleigh longer if the sleigh & reindeer are spaced apart). Santa is 6-1/2 long (measured diagonally/seated) x 3-1/4 wide across the arms. The sleigh measures 15 long overall x 4-1/2 wide x 5 high at the front peak.

The reindeer measures 8 high to the tip of the soft lead antlers (6-3/4 high to the tip of the ears) x 7-3/4 long (nose across the tail) x 2-3/8 wide across the belly. The underside of the reindeer has a small round blue & white printed paper label: MADE IN GERMANY ; Santa Claus has a round Blue & white paper label on the bottom of his right boot: GERMANY (see close-ups). The reindeers head removes to reveal a hollow space for candy.

He is very realistic with black carved wood hooves, soft (removable) lead antlers, a glass eye (right eye is missing), leather tack & harness with tiny metal hardware and is covered with a fine, soft shaded tan & brown velvet with skillfully painted black details. The sleigh has a gold painted twig frame with a wood base & seat and is covered in a fine loofah moss. There are tree brush trees in the back of the sleigh which may or may not be original.

Santa has a hand painted composition face, composition hands & boots and is wearing a white trimmed red felt jacket with blue pants. Condition: There are no breaks, touch-ups or repairs. There is some overall wear consistent with the age & gentle use of the item, details as follows. As mentioned previously the reindeers tiny right eye is missing.

There is considerable paint wear to the soft lead antlers (most on the tips see photos). The leather rein on the left side is detached from the edge of the face harness & has a few crinkles; the leather rein on the right is shorter than the left (6-1/2 right, 10 left). There appears to be some missing leather harness to the right of the tack on the reindeers stomach on both sides (minor).

Only a bit of white rabbit fur remains on Santas moustache & beard; there is light uniform age soiling to his coat & pants, he has a factory hole in his right hand in which to place a feather tree branch. Some wear to the original factory gold paint on the sleighs frame the shafts on the front of the sleigh bend slightly to the right (not a damage, merely natural curvature from shrinkage/age, minor and not structural). The tiny brush tree is a little threadbare, the larger one has no base.
