The piece is all hand made, and hand painted. Santa has no arms, but he was designed to be that way. He has a wonderful felt coat, and a rabbit fur beard. His face is beautiful - composite with hand painted features.
He is sitting in a cardboard sleigh that is covered in a light coat of plaster or paper mache, and covered with "sugar" glitter. There are two metal "loops" on the front of the sleigh that originally held ribbon that was looped around the reindeer as tack.
The reindeer is totally wonderful! He is made from composite and wood over wire.
He has both antlers, and his paint and composite is good. There are some light cracks to the composite on his legs, visible in the photos (one on each leg), and the underside of his tail has started to chip a tiny bit. The paint is starting to crack a little bit on his antlers, but overall is really excellent.Usually, with composite animals from this era, they wind up missing the composite on their legs, and their antlers and ears are almost always missing. Both pieces have wonderful "patina" - the age related look that items get over time. Both pieces are marked Germany, and they are a wonderful set! All that is missing is some candies for the back of Santa's sleigh! The sleigh measures 4 3/4" long, and Santa, seated, is about 3 1/2". He is holding a littler tree, that looks like fibers of some kind. The reindeer measures 4" long and is about 3 3/8" tall. Any color variations between the photos are just that - my photos. The clothes are a nice true red, the sleigh is white, and the face is slightly tanned flesh colored. In one photo that I left in the mix because it shows his features well, his face looks a bit purple. I have lots of vintage candy containers, including quite a few antique German ones, so take a look. All my antique ones are guaranteed old and authentic. I DO have some newer ones, and they are clearly marked as new. I have a new reproduction Santa in his sleigh for sale, and once you see it (especially up close), it's easy to see the differences. The new one has plastic boots, a face that is too perfect - it is made from a plasticized composite, and his felt clothes are new - they look new, and are, of course. The sleigh is wood, but again, the wood hasn't aged in any way.
The old pieces develop a patina (the aged look that items get). Anyway, the differences are subtle, but noticeable. I also have a Japan Santa in his sleigh, as well as another German one, without a reindeer. Payments required within four days, please.
